The topic has come up several times in the past few posts (Elves, Dragons, Ancient Structures, even as far back as the Pyramid post) regarding to aliens. I listened and launched out on an objective search for a bit of alien intrigue to entertain you and make you wonder. Where do you think that will take us for this Immortal Monday? Let’s zip through the past and take a few minutes to look at those beautifully rich in culture Mayans.
Today, the Mayans remain a huge mystery to us, leaving us with amazing works of art and architecture, as well as detailed prophecies. Their evidence of large mammal and human sacrifice paint a picture of a very graphic culture that we can only begin to imagine. But what happened to these people? That has always been the unanswered question. They simply disappeared around 500 A.D., leaving their cities abandoned, to be reclaimed by the natural habitat surrounding them.
In 1952 the archaeologist Alberto Ruz discovered a sealed passageway when working at the Temple of Palenque. It would lead him to discover the tomb of King Pacal. This alone was an amazing discovery. But what he found chiseled on the stone lid baffled and intrigued him, and many more to follow.
What he found appeared to be the king depicted as an astronaut, piloting his own spaceship. Look closely at the picture. You can see the seat, headrest, air tube and controls. Even the fire from the thrusters. Many theorists have jumped on this bandwagon, loving the idea that the Mayans had help or guidance from any other, smarter sources (The Sky People). How else can you explain their detailed calendar and knowledge of a spherical world when the Europeans still thought the world was flat?
But according to Mayan legend, and many scholars have come to believe it to be so, this elaborate etching is merely a symbol of King Pacal falling into the jaws of the Earth monster each night, only to rise again each day with the power of the sun.
And what about the Mayan Calendar, what do you make of that and the end of this year?………………………………………………… the calendar. Um, ouch.
For the first time in history the Mayan calendar doesn’t continue beyond whatever big event awaits us. Is this because our future is unwritten? Will something befall us or is it a big myth made to scare us? It’s no doubt that the Mayans were a smart people and they knew the cycles of the sun and stars. December 21, 2012 marks the end of the winter solstice. Venus will set and a new phase will begin. NASA predicts that the sun may reverse its magnetic poles in 2012 as a result of our 11 – year sunspot cycle coming to an end. There is a chance that this could have a profound effect on the earth’s own magnetic field, possibly resulting in more of the sun’s protons reaching the Earth’s surface. Could the damage go beyond this? A cleansing by fire of the earth?
Could it happen? My mind is always open to possibilities. Will it happen? I haven’t jumped on that bandwagon just yet. What about you? Where do you weigh in? What are your thoughts on the Mayan predictions of our life changing event at the end of the year? And do you think they had help or even were that help inscribing those predictions on the tablets…or were they “the helpers”? Mayans – did they know The Sky People or were they The Sky People?

This is one of those things that I find fascinating but doesn’t seem to apply to my life. Sort of like the way I thought about Y2K. I thought it was interesting and I paid attention at midnight, but that was about it 🙂

I tend to think the same way. I remember going to the market and the water isle was barren. Everyone went crazy stocking up thinking this was the end. LOL I bought two bottles – JIC 😀 Like that would have gone far. Hahaha
It’s funny. I think about “stocking up” but then I think-those things expire and you have to rotate your stock, etc . . and who has the time (or the space) to be doing all that? 🙂
Yep. The expiration date. I’ve been looking at those in our earthquake kits lately. My grandmother was so convinced everything was going to stop working with the change in 2000 she paid off all her loans, bought a generator, gas powered stove and huge bins of beans and rice. She was ready! When the food was getting near their expiration date we were looking for a good shelter to donate it all to. Of course, had it happened we would have all been making a B-line for her house. LOL
I find it interesting, but I think they just figured they’d procalendarhe calendar out far enough and decided to call it a day (or epoch LOL). Although I won’t rule out aliens – I don’t necessarily belive it, but it’s not hard to imagine they had help building the cities and pyramids!
Ha ha. Yep, I guess anything is possible. I think we will all be laughing about this in 2013.
Aliens are a possibility, IMO. Given how many stars there are, the potential for inhabitable planets is astronomical. makes sense to me. December 21? hmmm not worried about that at all. I’ll be too busy preparing for Christmas to worry about the Mayan Calendar.
I agree that the possibility of life on other planets is very real. It doesn’t make sense that life would be created on this little planet and not elsewhere when the universe is so vast. I’m so glad we haven’t found anybody worrying with regards to the end of the world yet. 🙂
My dad used to subscribe to the New Yorker and I remember back in the day they made fun of those preaching the end of the world. Later everyone thought the end of the world would occur at the turn of the century. I don’t believe anything is going to happen except many will wake up with tremendous hangovers from partying on the “21st!”
LOL! I have no doubt there will be some heavy duty hangovers on December 22nd and again on January 1st 2013. 😀
The world is surely in a difficult space right now. But remember our parents post world war 2 were concerned about communism, the yellow peril and the reds under the bed …. the Bible also says we are in end times and it seems like that sometimes. I reckon just take each day one day at a time, reach out a helping hand when one can, know that this life we have is not a dress rehearsal, appreciate all the good and the wonders of the creation that we do witness on a daily basis, be grateful for what we do have …
That the Bible does. And how long the end times is to last we are not to know. No one is to know when the end is to come. Every generation has to have something to worry about. It’s part of human nature. I agree with you 100%, we definitely should appreciate all the good and wonders of the creation we bare witness to daily. We should never take our time or days for granted. I don’t worry about the end of the world to be honest because there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it. Remember the millenium bug? So, yes, I try to do the best I can each day and live in each moment.
That’s a good way to look at it, Christine, no matter what the Mayans were. I do remember the millennium bug all too well. 🙂

Great post. Did you see the movie Apocalypto? Shows the brutality of the human sacrifice rituals carried out by the Mayans.
I was just talking about that movie the other night with someone. Funny you should bring it up. So brutal.
Doesn’t it seem silly? Of course, should the day come we won’t be laughing at those who are prepared for it. 😀 I highly doubt I’ll be one of them. 😐
I always wanted to see the Mayan pyramids in person, but thought I never would. Then, a few years ago, my mother-in-law decided the whole family needed to go on a cruise together. Yikes! Short of being clubbed over the head, promises that I would be able to cast my own eyes upon these wonders was the only thing that got me on that boat. As it turned out, I went willingly and enjoyed our Mayan tour in Belize so much. I have about a million pictures from the experience too.
And would I go to all the trouble and expense to see them again? Sure… only we’d need better transportation. That cruise ship just wasn’t big enough to hold so many Ritchies at the same time! I spent half my days hiding in the window well in our cabin with the curtains closed behind me. (True story.)

Sounds like you have a big happy family. We recently went on our first cruise and the four of us did alright. I would love to head down and see the Mayan pyramids. That would be amazing! We do plan to take another trip in the future. We’ll see. You were very lucky to get that opportunity.

I think they were here and then got bored and left. They left the 2012 “prophecy” for us to ponder and predict. They are somewhere watching and laughing at our attemts to figure it all out. Joke’s on us.

Wait a minute… what are all these damn elves doing under my feet??? And what’s this about Mayan Spaceships… I thought the title was Immoral Monday! Well, after my initial disappointment, I read with great interest the discovery of Alberto Ruiz, and King Pakal Ahau… Astronaut or Astronot. The Sky People would certainly have helped with shaping the thinking of our Earth to round. Lots of good theories to ponder with these discoveries. And I have heard about a big Mayan do in 2012… so this was an interesting post to start off another week with… I will just make sure I read the title with more care next time. Oh, and thanks a lot for the sunspot/magnetic pole reversing info!
What? You were confused? 🙂 Well you see, if King Pakal lived in 500 A.D., but said he’d be back in 2012 then I think that qualifies him for an Immortal Monday. That’s a pretty darn long life for a non-immortal. See how I worked that? 😀 Plus we like to look at the stomping grounds of immortals from time to time. Check the New Orleans or pyramids post. Mix it up so you don’t get bored. I’m glad you found something of interest here. 😉
Love this post! I have to keep an open mind about all the things you’ve brought up. I don’t like to buy into the doom and gloom, but have to admit, there is a lot of craziness going on right now that aligns with their, and other’s prophecies. I’m not sure this means that they had a ‘supernatural’ means of predicting these events. Maybe instead, it’s that they have a lot longer history of observing planetary cycles than is usually ascribed to humans civilizations? Maybe it’s aliens? I also have to admit, I’m kind of excited to see what’s going to happen, if anything.
I think keeping an open mind about all things is the only way to go. To close ourselves off is silly. But to try and see too much in things is also silly. So I’ll just wait and see what happens. People are going to see signs where they want to see signs. And I think a long history at observing and understanding the planetary cycles would give them a great advantage. Thanks, Serena.
I always find it funny that we say the Mayans disappeared. That political structure disappeared, but the people didn’t. Where I live and work there is a big Mayan population. So, of course I have asked about the prophecy. I know one kid whose uncle is very high up in the current Mayan political system in the Yucatan. He explained to me that it doesn’t signify the end of the world, but the end of an era, or generation. A new era, or generation will begin, and it will/would have it’s own calendar that goes for who knows how long. I know I’m not explaining it right, but it made total sense when he said. So, I know there is nothing to worry about. But it’s very interesting! 🙂
Yes. I almost got into that, but opted not to for length’s sake. It means that life as we know it, as we are used to will change. A new era will begin. For example, our social structure or political structure will change. Something like that. I almost wrote all this in another comment a few back but stopped myself. We see a lot of changes starting to happen already.

Hi Debra! What a nice exchange of conversation you started on a very timely subject. Have you noticed that most people like to joke about a subject that they’re not quite comfortable with? I do appreciate Emma’s comment that the Mayans are still here. Or their decendents are still here. And there is the Bible’s viewpoint that no one but God knows the day or the hour in which he promises to bring to an end all wickedness on earth. I do believe that Marcy is right. Colin Falconer did write an interesting post about this. My husband and I had the opportunity to tour the pyramids in Mexico years ago. The building of them was a feat beyond what we could comprehend. How did they get there? How did they build them? Will the end come in December? Do we have any say in the matter? Yes, well I don’t think I was completely serious in my presentation. I expected that kind of response. It wasn’t meant to be a doomsday post. I did mean to comment to Emma about the Mayan’s, but I hit the reply too soon. That’s what happens when I multi-task. LOL I personally subscribe to Marcy’s point of view. I have heard that before and it makes perfect sense to me. Of course, the world is ending at my house multiple times a day so if they really want to start the apocalypse, bring it on. 😀 Oh, and the pyramids – maybe they had help and maybe they didn’t. I’ve seen some interesting shows where they reenacted how they may have moved the stone and built the giant structures. So maybe it is possible.
I never know waht the heck I am going to find when I stop here. The Myans are fascinating. A little over the top, yes, but fascinating. Someday, I will climb those pyramids. Wow, what a post I will have after that!

Great post, Debra. I’ve been wanting to read it all week and had no internet for two days, then too many interruptions! I heard the same thing Emma said, that it’s the beginning of a new cycle, not the end of the world. I watched a documentary about the Mayan calendar on I think The History Channel, and they really played up the end of the world theme. Ticked me off because they purposely misled people just for ratings! They lost credibility in my book. Oh, and like Emma mentioned the Mayan people are still here. Mel Gibson hired many of them for his Mayan movie.
No internet! Yuck. Sorry to hear that Lynn. Are you out in the country? My mom has a lot of acreage around her and used to have internet issues. I think I mentioned it in one of the other comments, I am very aware of the new cycle prophecy and have heard a lot about it. In fact, if you are paying attention, you could pick out plenty of things to support it in the beginning stages now. But I will keep my thoughts to myself. I didn’t get into that in the post because I like to keep the posts under 1000 words, 700 words preferred. Immortal Mondays tend to get away from me. But I am willing to revisit that prediction in December. 🙂 If any come to pass, that’s the one I would bet on.
As for the Mayans – I think the reason so many people say they disappeared is because they up and left so many cities. That’s the real mystery. Why did they just move out like that? Perfectly good realestate, why do you spend all that time building it and then just walk out? Do the Mayans living today have an answer for that? I’m curious. And did you see Apocolypto? Wow. That’s all I’m saying.
