Project 2487
He pulled project 2487 from its slot and placed it on the makeshift pedestal. Eyes closed, he directed a pointer at the sphere. Peking, the latest chosen location delighted him.
His lips curved slightly upward as his fingers flew across the keyboard. The experiment’s final stage ‒ his favorite.
The globe changed with each keystroke on the computer. He’d never admitted it, but he enjoyed playing God.
What was that? Project 2487 rumbled unexpectedly. Curious, he grabbed the magnifying glass and inspected more closely.
Interesting. The subject’s inhabitants were destroying each other. He double checked project 2487’s name – Earth.

I’m late showing up to this week’s Friday Fictioneers. I’ll admit to being under the weather and not staying on top of my comments as well as I’d like. In addition, I haven’t been making it to that many blogs lately because both my pillow and kids have been extra needy the past week or two If I haven’t gotten back to you, please accept my apologies.
If you enjoyed this flash fiction and would like to give something like this a try, please join us. Today’s Friday Fictioneers prompt was organized by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. The picture was provided by Doug Macllroy.

I enjoyed this but I’m wondering if you mean “Peking” i(as the city in China formerly known as Peking) nstead of “Peaking” or if it was just a made-up name.
Ugh. I hate typos. Thanks so much for catching that. Should have checked comments right away rather than curl back up in bed. I appreciate you coming by.
Debra, if that’s the worst thing that you do today, you’re in great shape. As they say, typos happen, usually right after you send and email or post something. 🙂
So true. Thanks.
How well I know the truth of this. 😉
Cool story! Even though I guessed where this one was going. 🙂
Well, I guess you’re too smart for me. 😉 Glad you liked it. Thanks, Jennette.
Enjoyed this but I also guessed where it was going. Let’s face it, Earth IS a MESS !!
It is, isn’t it? It’s so sad. Thanks for stopping by, Lora.
Hey no apologies needed here, as nothing has infected your writing. Loved the ending, Debra.
You’re such a sweetie, Ted. Thanks.
Ohhhh very VERY nice! Got some good stuff in there! In other words … DON’T LEAVE ME HANGIN’! Am waiting to read the sequel.
Hehe. What? I have to give this story more thought? Goodness, you don’t ask much, do you? 😉 Just kidding. I’ll let the idea stew for a bit and see where it lead me. Thanks for that awesome compliment.
Nicely done. Hope you’re soon feeling back on top form – nothing worse than being under the weather in the Christmas run up.
Thanks, Sandra. I’m working on getting better. The head cold has gotten the better of me I’m afraid. Let’s hope it’s near the end.
Dear Debra,
The week’s events haven’t affected your stellar writing. Quite a few god complexes out there this week. At least your MC admits to it.
Hope you and your family are well for Christmas. I was sick last Christmas and it was NOT fun.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thanks, Rochelle. I’m hoping to get around to more FF later today and tomorrow as I am up to it. I don’t enjoy being sick at all. I’m sorry you were sick last Christmas. I can imagine how that went. Ugh. I was blowing my nose all day yesterday while my daughter kept asking me (non-stop) if I would make cookies with her. Nobody would want cookie I made in this condition. LOL.
Very apt for the sorry state of the world these days.
So sad that it’s true. I keep hoping we (as in the greater people) will learn and change our ways.
I wonder if even he can put an end to it. Great take on the prompt
I wonder… I pose an interesting question. After all, he in’t God, only playing God. There is a huge difference. Hmm. Thanks, H.L.
Hi Debra,
No need to apologize. Just sharing your story is enough and everyone has weeks like that. Liked your final sobering comment about earth’s inhabitants destroying each other. Good thing there’s less than a week left until the end of the world! Ron
LOL. Oh, yeah. Good point. We are running out of time, if you subscribe to the misinterpretation of the Mayan prophecy. So we shouldn’t have to put up with this for much longer, right? 😉
Can’t be easy being God when the world looks like it does.
You’re telling me. It has to be beyond frustrating. But then, God is a loving God. Oh, wait. He’s not really God. So… Maybe this is exactly what he wanted. For the purposes of this piece, mind you. Thanks, Björn.
Earth, the place is a…….never mind I will leave the cursing for my blog. Nice job. Feel better!
Tom
LOL. Thanks for keeping the foul mouth at home, Tom. You never know who might stop in. I’m glad you liked it. I’m working on getting better. I am under orders to rest. You can see how well I behave. 😀
Great work, Debra! I like this a lot. It would be nice if playing God he could change what’s happening there,
I couldn’t agree more Amy. This world could use a little helping hand. I’m so pleased that you enjoyed my fiction. 🙂
LOVE IT!
Thanks! I’m tickled that you popped in.
Glad you are back, nice post!

Thank you, Scott. I hope to visit everyone’s post later today and tomorrow. I’m looking forward to reading yours.
sadly prophetic. and well done.
Thank you, Rich. Sad wasn’t what I was originally going for, but I can clearly see it now. I’ll have to work on that next week. Enough sadness already.
Life and living does tend to get in the way of writing and blogging. You wrote a nice story on the photo prompt. Much better thanmine that never materialized.:)
It is a constant challenge. I’m sorry things got in your way this week. I hope everything is alright or will be soon. Take comfort in your loved ones and enjoy the magic of the season. Blogging should not be your top priority. Thank you for stopping by.
Dear Debra,
The Earth is always going to be fine. Humans, on the other hand, appear to be a temporary anomaly on its surface.
Great story this week.
Aloha,
Doug
I had a feeling we were playing God this week – I’m surprised more of the Fictioneers didn’t do the same. You made a good point about the world in an interesting way. Nice job.
I don’t know how you managed to pack so much story into so few words every week but…good job, Debra! Hope you are on the mend. 🙂
You should give it a try, Kristy. It’s a great exercise and makes for good practice. I am on the mend. Just in time for Christmas. Thanks!
I may do that at some point. I’ll have to see how it goes. Wrong as it may be, I’ve cut back quite a bit on the blogging. It’s the only way I can get any real writing done.
So glad you’re feeling better…and thanks again for the ornament. I love it…and value your friendship more than I can say. 🙂
