Hit by the Lucky 7! BAM!

Have you seen the Lucky 7 meme going around? Crazy as it may sound, I got tagged not once, but four times! No, seriously, I did. Jennifer L. Oliver over at World Beneath the Evening Star hit me on the 20th, CC MacKenzie at Fizz and Fangs on the 22nd, Lisa Hall-Wilson from Girls With Pens on the 23rd, and Alica McKenna Johnson at Arm Chair Adventures on the 26th. Thank you, ladies. I adore you all!

What does this mean for you? This is the way it works. I am to give you a little peek at my current work in progress. Honestly, I hesitate to do that. Not because I lack confidence in my work, but because I made a conscious choice not to post any pieces of the story on my blog.

But I’ll tell you what. I took a look at where the lucky 7 falls and it doesn’t give away too much. So I’ve decided to make this one exception and share with you seven lines from my current WIP.

These are the rules:

1. Go to page 77 of your current MS/WIP
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next 7 lines, sentences, or paragraphs, and post them as they’re written.
4. Tag 7 authors, and let them know.

Are you ready? I’m going to throw you right in the middle of something with no explanation. Color me evil. 🙂

“Come on, girl. Let’s get you home. It’ll be dark soon.” Stepping to the side, he opens the car door for me. Always the gentleman.

Nothing is said on the drive home. It’s uncomfortable, but I haven’t a clue how to change things, so I don’t try. After all, my explanation would sound crazy. Instead, I rest my head on the window, concentrating on the vibration of the car and road.

Mom’s waiting for us when we pull in the driveway, her face painted in a palette of upset and worry when she steps through the door to greet us. Her look strikes a chord. Crap. My actions were selfish. What was I thinking, putting her through that? There’s so much about her I don’t know. So much she has apparently been through, and has chosen not to share.

There it is. I can’t even remember how many times it’s been changed/edited.  *shrugs*

Now for the next Lucky 7! Drum roll, please:

It’s not mandatory, and there will be no hand slapping should you choose not to participate. You know we are all dying to see your work, would you do that for us? Anyone else who is not tagged but would like to jump in, feel free! The more the merrier!

~oOo~

Know that I always appreciate your time and love it when you stop by, plus take the time to comment. Huge thanks! If you enjoyed this piece or any of my previous pieces, I’d be delighted to have you follow via email or RSS for any future posts!

How fun! Now I’m totally interested. I can’t wait to find out what the story is about. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Emma. You’re welcome. Taken like this you can’t get much from this piece. It leaves you in a state of wonder.

  2. krystalwadekrystalwade

Ooh. I’m intrigued. And it’s present tense. I happen to love present tense!

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Yep. You’re stuck inside her head for the entire book. 🙂

  3. Marcy KennedyMarcy Kennedy

That is an intriguing snippet 🙂
And now I’ve been tagged by both you and Emma so I’ll have to put something together for next week 🙂

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

That’s right! Tagged more than once. Can’t wait to see what you come up with. 🙂

  4. susielindaususielindau

Sounds like a great book! Good for you putting it out there!

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Thank you, Susie. And you’re welcome. Will we be seeing a snippet of yours any time soon?

  5. Lisa Hall-WilsonLisa Hall-Wilson

Oooh – sounds like trouble is brewing. Fun excerpt. Glad you decided to play along.

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Thank you, Lisa. Definitely. Things are brewing..

Hi Debra, I know what you mean about showing your work. It’s hard when you don’t think its ready, yet you did it! I am standing and applauding you! And the little snippet was just perfect. Not too little and not too much. Well, now I got snagged five times. Is someone trying to tell me something? lol 🙂

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Thank you, Karen. I admit it’s fun seeing bits and pieces of everyone’s work. I had decided not to share from my book for personal reasons, but things designed from the story for the blog are fine. I started a journal series by my protagonist that pre-dates my book by two years. I need to get back to developing that further. I haven’t touched it in months. I got hung up when wordpress didn’t have what I wanted in the visual department. At least, not without a fee. Can’t wait to see what you put up. 🙂

Oh, what a lovely cadence your words have. I enjoyed it!! And, I have questions and I want more, so hurry and get this published!

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Thank you, Ginger. I can’t rush publication since I will be seeking traditional representation.

  8. Jennifer Jensen (@jenjensen2)Jennifer Jensen (@jenjensen2)

Ooh, I am totally pulled in. (If I said totally sucked in, would I sound like a teenager?) I agree, hurry up and get it published!

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Epically so! 😉 Thank you, Jennifer. First I need to get it professionally edited and then I need to find a publisher interested. Got one in your pocket? 😉

  9. Sadie HartSadie Hart

Nice seven! It’s very intriguing and a lot of ways a reader can take it. Can’t wait until you eventually share more about the story. Sounds like a powerful one.

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Thanks so much, Sadie! So true. When we grab seven sentences or so out of context it is hard to grasp the their true meaning. I like to think this is a powerful story. 😉 Thanks for stopping by!

  10. CC MacKenzieCC MacKenzie

Oh! This takes me back. Now I get why you write YA! Great job. Now where’s the rest?|

    xx

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Ha ha! Are you saying I talk like a teenager? 😉 I’ll take that as a compliment in this case. You can all see the rest when I publisher is interested enough to publish my baby. Thanks, Christine.

  11. Louise BehielLouise Behiel

I’m so glad you had the courage to put your writing out there.

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Thank you, Louise. I know it sounds like it was about courage, but that really wasn’t the issue. It’s about what potential publishers would like to see.

  12. coleen patrickcoleen patrick

Awesome Debra! I’ve been tagged twice so I guess I will be posting soon–I also have never put any of my stuff online before. 🙂

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

So we are in the same boat. It’s nice to have company, Can’t wait to see what you post.

  13. lynnkelleyauthorlynnkelleyauthor

Love this snippet, Debra! All your editing and revising paid off. This is very well written, and you’ve got us all wanting to know what happens and what already happened! I’m so glad you shared this with us!

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Thank you so very much, Lynn. You know how to make a person feel good. 🙂 Thank you for stopping by!

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

You’re welcome. And thank you for the lovely compliment! 😀

I love this meme! I’ve got mine all ready to go for tomorrow ~ thank you so much for thinking of me!!

Now I need to know what happens when she gets in the house. That’s the problem with this meme, though. Too little writing. We all want to know more, more, more!

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

But of course! You’ve teased me enough. I gotta hear something!

That’s funny you should say that because I was thinking it was just about right. I don’t want to give away too much on my blog. LOL

  15. Fabio BuenoFabio Bueno

I’m so curious about the conflict behind this excerpt, Debra. Lovely passage. I can’t wait to read the rest!
    I’ve been tagged 3 times–I’m running out of excuses…

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Fabio – Thanks! 😉 I saw you were tagged, that’s why I didn’t tag you. I tried to tag people I hadn’t seen tagged. Of course, a few got tagged after I put mine in the queue. It happens. Can’t wait to see what you post for us.

  16. August McLaughlinAugust McLaughlin

Aw, thanks, Debra! I’m still wrapping my brain around this tagging business, but so far, it’s been fun reading others’ posts. Love the excerpt! 🙂

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

I can understand that. As you can see I was hesitant myself. Not for fear, as I would welcome a critique that would help me improve, but for other reasons. I do enjoy the story writing far more than blog writing. That’s why I am considering adding a flash fiction day, per my 3/19 entry. Amber West is really onto something with her “Tell Me a Story” bit. http://wp.me/p1uTpm-HK Love it!

  17. Molly PendleburyMolly Pendlebury

Can’t wait to find out the Mom’s tales from the past!! Curious who’s driving her home and what she’s done to cause such worry……hhhhmmmmm…..can’t wait to read your published copy! Soon I hope!!! 🙂

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Hmm… mom, she’s a complicated one. I’ve had to pry things out of her. LOL She likes her secrets. Thank you, Molly. I would LOVE to get this in a finished format and find the right publisher. That would be a dream come true. Bucket list item – check!

  18. Kourtney HeintzKourtney Heintz

Debra, that’s some amazing writing there. I want to know more! 🙂 Congrats on getting the 7 Meme and thanks for sharing this scene–it’s AMAZING!

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Hi Kourtney! What timing! I’ve had your site open for a while now. LOL I read through your post and got pulled away by the kids before I could comment. That’s so my life. 😀 Got a kick out of your GTKY, Award and Lucky 7 all in one. Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. It means a lot to me.

      • Kourtney HeintzKourtney Heintz

Hand on the Bible, that is an intriguing piece of writing you posted up there! 🙂 I like to roll awards and games into one post. I think it covers more ground, though it makes for a longer post. 🙂

  19. Sheila SeabrookSheila Seabrook

Debra, this is the second bit from your story that I’ve read and I absolutely love your voice. I can’t wait till you finish the book and get it out there so I can read it. Simply lovely. 🙂

    • Debra KristiDebra Kristi

Thank you so much, Sheila. That is so kind of you to say. You know how to make a girl feel good. 🙂
