Poetry Punch and the Rhythm Road

Did you know April is National Poetry month?

You may have heard the rumors.

The celebration of lyrical words was established by the Academy of American Poets in 1996 to heighten the public’s awareness of the fine art.

This tidbit of knowledge probably already has you feeling a smidgen taller.

Poetry was never my strong point. It’s something I fail to put into practice enough that I may truly excel. The rhythm of words, that was my sister’s pursuit—Kristi’s thing. She had a binder where she kept all her treasures of metered verses. Some she was working on, some perfected, some still a work-in-progress.

If this is your first stops by the blog, then you may not know my sister left the physical world over a decade ago. A stack of unfinished poems was one of the things she left behind.

In honor of April’s National Poetry Month I’m going to share one of them with you today.

The Friend Within

My sister wrote this as a college project back in the 1990’s. She is the “Kristi” in Debra Kristi, and my muse—the reason I finally took writing serious. Together we are a team.

For more poetry to reach any range of emotion, click your heels together and be swept over to any or all of the following:

Lena Corazon at Flights of Fancy – “Pure Inspiration”

Lynn Kelly at Random Acts of Wierdness – “The Dance”

Moondusterwriter’s at penned with moon dust – “Pound of Flesh”

The Crazy Life of a Writing Mom – “Lightning in the Storm”

All things Purple at The Musings of a Super Normal Girl Named Laura – “dance with me”

Do you have a poet’s heart thrumming within you? Got any lyrical words you’d like to share here today? We’d love to hear them!

Until next time, immortally yours.

I love your sister’s poem, Debra. Sounds like she was quite a prolific poet. It’s a shame she passed so young and didn’t get to finish so many. I’m sorry for the loss of your sister. Any plans to publish a collection of her poetry?

Thanks so much for including my poem in your mashup!

Really enjoyed Kristi’s poetry Debra, what a wonderful body of work she created. I can’t imagine your loss and how life without her must be. However, I am glad for the strength you have together. Sisterhood is powerful.

Your sister’s poem is wonderful! I can’t write poetry to save myself, so I have a lot of respect for those who can do it so well.

That was an awesome poem. Your sister was very talented. I hope some day you’ll publish some of her works if you haven’t already done so. That would be a great honor to her.

What a remarkable poem Deborah. Your sister was quite talented and unique. What a horrible loss. So glad you have those special heartfelt words that she recorded to comfort your family. Thank you for sharing this. It’s just beautiful.

That is very beautiful. If the rest are like this, it’s sad that the world will never see them, but I understand that many writers are nervous about sharing their work with others. It sounds like your sister was pretty normal in that. 🙂
