Did you know April is National Poetry month?
You may have heard the rumors.
The celebration of lyrical words was established by the Academy of American Poets in 1996 to heighten the public’s awareness of the fine art.
This tidbit of knowledge probably already has you feeling a smidgen taller.
Poetry was never my strong point. It’s something I fail to put into practice enough that I may truly excel. The rhythm of words, that was my sister’s pursuit—Kristi’s thing. She had a binder where she kept all her treasures of metered verses. Some she was working on, some perfected, some still a work-in-progress.
If this is your first stops by the blog, then you may not know my sister left the physical world over a decade ago. A stack of unfinished poems was one of the things she left behind.
In honor of April’s National Poetry Month I’m going to share one of them with you today.
My sister wrote this as a college project back in the 1990’s. She is the “Kristi” in Debra Kristi, and my muse—the reason I finally took writing serious. Together we are a team.

I love your sister’s poem, Debra. Sounds like she was quite a prolific poet. It’s a shame she passed so young and didn’t get to finish so many. I’m sorry for the loss of your sister. Any plans to publish a collection of her poetry?

The family has only ever shared two of my sister’s poems, this one and the one she wrote the day before her death. I don’t know if we would ever share all of them, not without her blessing. And I don’t think she’d want all of them shared. She was rather private about them. Kind of sad when you think about it. All those beautiful words left locked away, never to be enjoyed by others. 🙁
Really enjoyed Kristi’s poetry Debra, what a wonderful body of work she created. I can’t imagine your loss and how life without her must be. However, I am glad for the strength you have together. Sisterhood is powerful.

That is very beautiful. If the rest are like this, it’s sad that the world will never see them, but I understand that many writers are nervous about sharing their work with others. It sounds like your sister was pretty normal in that. 🙂
